Choice of "alcohol" - Water or Apple Juice

We had the option of choosing between two "alcohol" options  to give the impression that our protagonist is a alcoholic:

Water "Vodka"

  • + Gives the impression  that it is a strong alcoholic drink
  • + Not difficult to obtain its FREE
  • - may just look like the protagonist is clearly drinking water
  • - difficult to make it look like he's an alcoholic if vodka is taken in small shots
  • - difficult to obtain the right shot glass

* WE CHOSE THIS*

Apple Juice "Whiskey"

  • + Looks realistic
  • + Easy to obtain and cheap
  • + Can make him look like  real alcoholic to make it look like a large glass of whiskey
  • - Colour of the apple juice may make it look fake

Props

Apple Juice

Apple Juice:
We need to create the illusion that our character was an alcoholic we needed to introduce some form of alcohol. the apple juice is supposed to look like whiskey. We just settled on a simple Tesco Value Apple Juice which costed about 65p.

Suit and Tie

Suit and Tie:
We needed the protagonist and his partner to look like real professionals as they were supposed to be dectectives at work. The suit and Tie make the character seem older and more serious which is what we wanted to portray them as we are fulfilling a common convention with film noirs as the protagonist often wears suits and looks serious.

Glass
Glass:
We needed a glass which looked similar to a posh whisky glass often found in the homes of seasoned drinkers. We wanted it to look like he is no stranger to alcohol. The transparency of the glass also worked in our favour as it gave us a great shot of the protagonist pouring the alchol in the glass

Alcohol bottle
Magner Irish Beer Original:
We wanted to exhibit that or protagonist is a raging alcoholas we shot a sene of him drinking in broad daylight and further emphasised his problem with alcohol. We emptied the bottle and replaced it with lemonade so that we would be able to give the illusion that he was drinking alcohol.

Shot list

To prepare for our filming sessions we creaed a shot list for our film so that we knew exactly the shots we needed to make the film work. This meant that we had to take into account the genre of our film, what we wanted to get across to our audiences and what we needed to make it work the way we had envisioned the film. Below is the final version of the shotlist that we came up with.

We felt that this shot list would enable us to successfully convey emotion if acted upon correctly, as our film involves an individual who is going through a rather difficult time so getting his emotions across to the audience would be vital, especially seeing as how monologue is the primary way the story is told.

Important Equipment

The  'clapper' or 'clap board'
Since we were having a slight difficulty in recording the sound we decided that we would record seperately then synchronise it with the footage at a later date. The clapper was used to give us a signal of when we should add in the audio. The clapper also made editing easier as we were able to group certain scenes together as it was written down on the board.

The Tape on string
The stape on the string allowed us to be as precise as possible when filming different takes in the same scene. For continuity reasons it was important that certain characters stayed in the exact same place, so that when we edited the camera didnt look jumpy or jaring as the character stayed in the same place. We did this by sticking a piece of tape on the exact place we wanted them to stand.

Slanted Lens lighting
In the living room scene we had to ensure that we created a nice warm lighting to give the illusion that he was in his own home and not the dimly lit staffroom he was actually in. We had to tilt and slant it several times throughout shooting as often the lighting would change when we changed the camera angle. We used a yellow gel sheet over the lens in order to achieve this warm look, we covered the entire head so that the colour wouldn't dim. No stray light could escape into the room or the effect of the gel wouldve been lost.

Script rewrite

After discussing the first copy of the script we realised that there were gaps in the story which would leave the audience confused. To avoid this, we corrected the script to make a short film that the four of us were satisfied with and we felt that it would all be explained successfully in the new script. Taking into account our time limitations, we came up with the idea to add a monologue overlay to the film. This supported the film noir theme we were going for and also it would enable the narrator to explain even more and it would help the audience become more engaged with the story. Below is a link to the script.

Location scouting for the murder scene

We needed to find a suitable location to film one of our key scenes and we needed to obtain somehwere which was out of reach to the general public with a narrow walkway or a dead end. This was so that we could create an isolated murder scene for Kausar to be killed in. Below are the list of possible options:
Stairs in the playground
The walkway looks edgy and dangerous which is great for our film but because it is in the playground sounds of school children interferes with audio of the film.

Dead end in the playground
Similar to the walkway, this dead end gave an isolated feel and claustraphobic feel but also the screams of school children would create an issue.

Choosing the right camera

*This was chosen for taking shots for our poster, due to the excellent stand still image quality*

Canon 7D

Pros:
  • Excellent image quality
  • Great low light
  • Full-frame shooting
Cons:
  • Heavy - difficult to carry around whilst shooting footage
  • Lacks a built-in, pop-up flash;
  • No external headphone jack; in order to listen to dialogue and audio

JVC Everio HD Camcorder

Pros:
  • Lightweight and small
  • Decent image quality
Cons:
  • Poor still quality especially indoors
  • Poor battery life
  • Extreme Landscpae focus - cannot be changed captures too much

*We chose this for filming, as it had the best balance of portability and overall image quality *

Canon Vixia / Legria HD

Pros:
  • Amazing low-light performance
  • Lighter travel
  • great photo image quality
  • Full manual control will lets us be more adventurous filmmakers and tweak our footage for a professional look
Cons:
  • built-in audio is horrible
  • No Built-in Light/Flash

Choosing between two microphones

Our script states that there is some dialogue in our short film so however limited the dialogue is it is still extremely important that what is said can actually be heard. So, we have to use an audio device.

This 'R0DE' mic was used within the indoor scenes, It's able to record sound to an
'above average' quality, and we felt it would be optimal for indoor conversations
and general sound. After recording a few scenes we discovered that the mic was
slightly faulty, as it was only using the left mic instead of the dual microphones,
making the audio very jarring as it jumped from stereo sound to single left speaker.
As this issue became persistent we decided to swap microphones for a more advanced
one that did not have issues with picking up sound from both mics.

The "Zoom H2 Handy Recorder" is the most effective mic/sound recorder at
our disposal. It is able to detect sound from far away distance and in high quality. The only
issue was that for outdoor shooting there was no windshield which meant that changes in wind
direction were picked up extremely well. To overcome this we creating a mock windshield,
in which we protected the microphone using a scarf. This helped us reduce the amount
of wind picked up, therefore eliminating interference. We used this for most of our
camera shots as most of our shots were filmed from a distance so we needed
something to pick up sound from far rather than the ambient sound from the outside.
We also planned to use it for our monologue recording.

The weather is dull with grey skies. A local school has children running around playing in the playground. Behind the school there is a path that leads to an alleyWalking down the path are two detectives. Character #2 (Partner)looks at character #1 (MC)MC doesn’t react.
PARTNER
How are you holding up?
MC
It’s different since she left.
MC and his partner continue walking down the path to the end of the alley. A crowd can be heard and also police sirens. On the floor lies a dead man. Both detectives look closely at the body. Partner looks at MC and sees he is frozen.
PARTNER
What’s wrong?
MC looks over at his partner.
MC
I know him.
The partner stares at MC. MC turns away and looks back at the body, shortly followed by the partner. MC crouches down and gets closer to the body and examines. The partner looks around the area and notices a camera. He looks back at MC.
PARTNER
Go home. I’ll deal with this.
MC gets up, looks at his deceased friend momentarily and walks away.

INT. HOUSE – DAY.
MC walks into his home. No curtains are opened so the room is dark. He takes a seat and looks at the table. On the table is two glasses, a bottle of alcohol and a ring. He grabs the bottle and pours himself a drink, and then places it back on the table. He sits back and drinks.

INT. SCHOOL BUILDING – DAY
MC makes his way through the school to the CCTV room. He walks down a few corridors and finds the room. He opens the door and walks in to see his partner stood there waiting for him. The partner points to the screen and tells MC to watch.
On the screen there is a recording of what happened that night the man was murdered. Frames of a fight shows MC what really happened that night. The video is drawing to a close and the face of the murderer is seen. It is MC. The partner turns to MC and stares.

Conventions of a Film Noir

There are several conventions of a film which give it the title as being a Film Noir these include:
  1. Corrupt Cops
  2. An alienated protagonist
  3. Rain drenched streets
  4. Alcoholics/ Alcohol
  5. Voice over narration - First person narrative
  6. Flashbacks
  7. Melancholic music (slow jazz)
  8. Whodunit?
  9. One wrong decision
  10. Amnesia

Target Audience

As a team we went around to our family, friends and people on the street to get a rounded view of what genre people enjoy the most the most. We asked around 40 people and also spilt males and females into two groups to find out whether they enjoy film noirs. The result was that the majority of people we asked liked film noirs and the main population was males aged 21 onwards.

The target gender is mainly aimed at males. This is because their are slightly sexist elements to film noirs which tends to not appeal to women. An example of this is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, where the protagonist finds himself torn between his case and his lover.

Choices for our media coursework

As expected, the A2 project would differ from the AS project we created last year. The A2 project would be more challenging in comparison and require two ancillary products to support the main product. As our media studies focused on film, the selection of briefs are as follows:

After discussions of the three briefs, we came to the conclusion that we would go with brief number 10 - a short film along a poster and a film magazine review page. The reason for this was because for our AS project we created a film opening, so we already had experience in the conventions with creating a film so now we agreed to take our skills that step further and create a short film.

Along with that, we chose to create a film magazine review page and a poster to support our short film. The reason for choosing to create a film poster was because we are extremely familiar with seeing film posters every day, so conventions of certain genres come to us naturally so it would be a great practice to actually create our own poster. Also, we'll be able to learn to use new software such as photoshop to create desired effects.

Lastly, the second ancillary piece we selected was a review page for the film. The reason for choosing this would be because we felt it would compliment our film greatly as typically films come with reviews. It would allow us to evaluate our own performance and learn from what we have done and what we could improve on, letting us benefit from reviewing our own work as accurately as we could. We can voice our own opinion and let others know what the film is about simultaneously.

Research film noir

The opening shots introduce the main character – Frank Bigelow  – as he walks in to a police station to report his own murder. Frank Bigelow is about to die, and he knows it. The accountant has been poisoned and has only 24 hours before the lethal concoction kills him. Determined to find out who his murderer is. As he frantically tries to unravel the mystery behind his own impending demise. In our Film we want to introduce this kind of quest for the truth. Similarly to D.O.A our protagonist suffers from the confusion of retracing his own past.

Amnesia and Film Noir

The best alcohol induced amnesia film which (links to our film as the protagonist has lost his memeory from the past 24 hours and goes to work as normal as if nothimg happened) is Black Angel.

Research amnesia in film noir

Dark Secret amnesia, in which traumatic memories are suppressed and have to be coaxed to the surface for the story to be resolved. In Hitchcock's Spellbound, amnesiac Gregory Peck is unable to remember either the accidental death of his brother or the murder of a doctor whose identity he then assumed - The film is designed dream sequence to jog his memory. This links to the ever presence of amnesia in our film as the protagonist finds it difficult to remeber what happened to him the night his friend was mudererd.
